This lecture contrasts some Centennial of Statehood commemorative activities with events and recollections from 1880 to 1940. It begins by considering the official license plate and the centennial postage stamp, each of which have embedded stories that tell us something about ourselves and what the state has experienced since 1912. The purpose of the lecture is to look back, to remember, but more than that: to see anew and understand more deeply why statehood matters.
