  • Description: Oreste Bachechi initiated the process of Italians settling in Albuquerque. Born in Bagni de Lucca in 1860, he came to Albuquerque in 1885. He opened a small tent saloon near the railroad to cater to the needs of travelers and railroad employees and later expanded this business into a prosperous wholesale liquor dealership. News of his economic success influenced other Italians to try their fortune in Albuquerque. Additionally, Bachechi lent some Italian immigrants money for their passage and helped them find work when they arrived. Bachechi�s role in bringing Italian immigrants to Albuquerque earned him the title �Father of the Albuquerque Italian Colony.� (Photo courtesy of Adelina Timofeyew.)
