Colcha Pattern

  • Title: Colcha Pattern
  • Creator: Federal Art Project
  • Subject: Embroidery; Patterns (Design elements)
  • Description: Over 40 vocational schools were founded as part of the New Deal programs in the state of New Mexico. These vocational school classes aimed to teach students the artistic skills they needed to become financially self-supporting. One of the lasting legacies provided by the instructors and director of the Vocational School Program in New Mexico was the series of "Blue Books" published to help in the design of the art objects. Within blue construction paper covers, each mimeographed edition included a brief history of the art and medium as well as descriptions of traditional materials and designs taken from private and museum collections. This colcha pattern is from one of these original "blue books". (Curtin Collection 5, Motif Number 2, Second Row)
