Land has many uses including hunting, farming, ranching, recreation and settlement. Ownership of land began when land grants were made to individuals and communities in the Spanish and Mexican eras. Many New Mexicans still live on land grants issued to early settlers.

|December 9, 1902 - The last case is filed before the Private Land Claims Court. In 13 years the court adjudicated 228 grants in New Mexico, 17 in Arizona and three in Colorado. A total of 158 claims were rejected and only 21 were confirmed without adjustment.|
